We’re All Going There

we don't know where we're going
but we're all going there
don't know where we're going
but we're all going there
we don't know where we're going
but we're all going there

so rest your head
and close your eyes

every slow and sick one
we're all going there
every young and quick one
we're all going there
every boy and every body
we're all going there

so rest your head
and close your eyes

are we there yet
no, we're not there yet
are we there yet
no, we're not there yet

you don't need directions
cuz we're all going there
we don't have directions
but we're all going there
and you will not be lonely
cuz we're all going there

so rest your head
and close your eyes
rest your head
and close your eyes

here they go again, marching in place
marching in place, here they go

it's adorable, they're marching in place
marching in place, it's a door

one two three four, yep yep yep
they can count and they can step

don't disturb them cuz they're marching in place
marching in place, don't disturb them

they won't hurt us just give them some space
give them some space, it can't hurt

five six seven eight, up down up
they can hate and they can love

it's just brotherhood, it's not a race
it's not a race, nobody wins

maybe we should also march just in case
march just in case, march in place

nine ten eleven twelve, left right left
marching ourselves blind and deaf

here we go again, marching in place
marching in place, here we go

i once loved a city
i once had a home
now i'm a sailor
sailing alone

i once had a kingdom
a princess, a queen
i watched them both slip away
like a sweet dream

sail on sweet dreams
sail on sweet dreams

i looked in the fire
i turned in the wind
i came to a soldier
asked where he'd been

but with each new hour
as silent as he
my dreams blowing further
and further from me

sail on sweet dreams
sail on sweet dreams

mind the waves, mind the rocks
don't look back, don't look back

but i once heard a brass band
march by my home
now i'm an old man marching alone

as the princess and queen
sail away from my song
til my eyes finally close
and i'm sailing along

sail on sweet dreams
sail on sweet dreams

like a drizzle or a hurricane
to go inside or go insane
in most regards they're really much the same
your eyes are wet, you miss the sun
can't do a thing about either one
come on, grow up
why must you swear, get hot and shake your fist
you swear that god'll get the gist
you're lifting weights three times a week
your friends are playing hide-and-seek
you stumble blindly, count your blessings
tell yourself the total's not depressing

and the fire spreads and the cities fall
and you're trying shoes on through it all, wondering
is the world too big or am i too small
is the world too big or am i too small

making noise you know no one will hear
or if a few do in one ear they'll push it out the other
guess you shoulda sent that shout out years ago
to their grandmothers
cuz the cool kids sneer and hiss at you
like bishops at a starving jew
like keystone coppers at a villain
just because you stole what little
soul you have from dylan
but you still insist it can't be wrong
to stay and gaze up at king kong
and hope he takes a fancy to your smile
and lifts you up where you can
blow the wind yourself
and see for miles

but we knew how to cry before we could crawl
and we just grew old, we never grew tall, wondering
is the world too big or am i too small

is the world too strong
or are we too weak
is god deaf
or did we never learn to speak

so you call call call though they ring ring ring
cuz you think you might be experiencing
what some call an emotion
but the keyboard sticks, the signal dies
and on its own a fancy phone will never bridge an ocean
so you think dry thoughts and dream wet dreams
and live life through your hometown teams
and hope they win the holy war
and hope they make it back to shore
and look for love in magazines
and wait until the trees turn green
to thank them for their oxygen, their paper
as you lock your bitter lips to earth
and try in vain to taste her

deep down we know the truth of it all
cinderella never made it to the ball
and she was wondering
is the world too big or am i too small
is the world too big or am i too small

stuck in the traffic of autumn
from green to yellow, from yellow to red
you coulda made that light
now you're sitting and watching
life pass by instead

from deep in the traffic of autumn
from green to yellow, from yellow to red
how can so much be changing
in front of your face
and nothing in your head

there's a chill wind blowing in again
better cover up your skin
this is no time to be caught naked
cuz i've seen the light, oh i saw the light
and what good did it do
i was too far away to make it

so i'm asking the traffic of autumn
from green to yellow, from yellow to red
why are all the most colorful things
the first to start dropping dead

there's a chill wind blowing in again
better cover up your skin
this is no time to be caught naked
cuz you've seen the light, oh you saw the light
and what good did it do
you were too far away to make it

if they’re pretty words we've sung them
if they're ugly words we've thought them
now we're falling here among them

chasing the traffic of autumn
from green to yellow, from yellow to red
what's lived
has bled

but now we're sharing the traffic of autumn
from green to yellow, from yellow to red
and we've finally seen each other's
true colors start to spread

if you wanna play with my hair
i'm gonna have to charge you
if you wanna send me spinning through the air
i'm gonna have to charge you
(a man's gotta make a living)

but if you wanna, wanna love me
i just might let ya, let ya for free

if you wanna play with my head
i'm gonna have to charge you
if you want me to play dumb or play dead
i'm gonna have to ask you to cover my expenses

but if you wanna, wanna love me
i just might let ya, let ya for free

why am i being so, why am i being so
why am i being so generous today
must be some kind of trick, you say, some kinda scam
but no, it's just the kind of guy i am

now if you wanna play with my heart
i cannot stop you
and i don't wanna leave things as they are
even if we ought to

so if you wanna, wanna love me
i just might let ya, let ya for free

on a swing in a playground
in a park in boston
up and down and up and down
holding on tight
not everything's gonna be alright
not everyone's gonna feel alright
there's a little league game just across the grass
the sun's about to set, the wind is rising fast
there must be a thousand fallen leaves blowin' through

and i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you
i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you

from a grey elevator
to a pale white office
up and down and up and down
holding on tight
not everything's gonna be alright
not everyone's gonna feel alright
whatever the battle, whatever the cost
freedom is won and freedom is lost
there must be a thousand dreams for each that comes true

and i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you
i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you

made for me and you
made for me and you
i would give anything to find a land
made for me and you

somewhere deep in the bedroom
you can almost hear them
up and down and up and down
deep in the night
not everything's gonna be alright
not everyone's gonna feel alright
the morning silver, the midnight black
if we ever had it, i want it back
there must be a million stars out, but what can they do

i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you
i'm afraid this land wasn't made for me and you

the first time i felt it was a shock, it was a joy
i froze and i melted like a man into a boy
bouncing block to block, swinging rope to rope
i finally caught her eye, but her mouth, it dashed all my hope
it said "nope nope nope"

and as i came tumbling down like a house of cards
i was thinking "i always thought this only happened
to other people's hearts"

but time it can be kind when it's not busy being cruel
and i can play the prince when i'm not busy as the fool
and you, who knew? the priestess of repair
my favorite acrobat up there blowing kisses in the air
do we dare

and we gazed into each other like long neglected works of art
each thinking "i always thought this only happened
to other people's hearts"

and if anybody's listening when i draw my final breath
as flesh turns to memory as life turns to death
some words may fall from me, a prayer or a rhyme
might ask for the past or i might ask for the time

but as the pump slows down and the beats move farther apart
i'll be thinking "i always thought this only happened
to other people's hearts"

i'd give the shirt right off my back
the pants off my legs, yeah, them too
when you're in danger i'd attack
i'll serve and protect you

i'll be your own sweet little guy
your lesser half
and if at times i make you cry
i'll make you laugh, too

but i will never be normal for you

i see the company you keep
doesn't know what to make of me
and they'd prefer an average creep
to a creep who's as strange as me

and yes, at times i look or do
or say something odd
but you know that we're all made
in the image of god, yes it's true

and i will never be normal for you

to review, i'd do almost anything for you
to keep you close, to know you'll still be mine
but being normal's where i have to draw the line

so whenever you're lost or trapped out there
i'll help you to break through
and love, whatever i can share
you know that i'll break it in two

i'll take a hit, i'll take the blame
i'll travel through hell
i'll call the cops, i'll call your name
i'll do anything else you want me to do

but i will never be normal for you
i will never be normal for you

we tried to make love
and it came out looking like
one of those abstract sculptures
everybody sees and nobody feels
rusty wire frame and a coupla spinning wheels
rusty wire frame and a coupla spinning wheels

we tried to make history
and it came out looking like a footnote
in a high school textbook on behavioral disorders
to learn more about obsession, put in another quarter

all i'm trying to say is
nothing came out quite like we intended
every bridge collapsed, every road dead-ended
and with each new trainwreck
we grew less and less convinced
we could build anything at all

then we took off our helmets
and looked at each other
i had mud on my forehead
you had dirt in your nails
a couple disengaged warheads
a couple stranded blue whales

we tried to make excuses
but they came out sounding like prayers
so we just knelt down & prayed together
and after the meltdown we laid together
crying 'praise the lord who built the world
and hung the stars by standing on a kitchen chair'
praise the lord who built the world
and hung the stars by standing on a kitchen chair

you just turned your head too slowly
and my aim was weak
but now the whole room shakes
the record skips skips skips

i meant to kiss you
on the cheek
not on the lips

can't you see that it was nothing
more than poor technique
you were hugging me
and suddenly i lost my grip

i meant to kiss you
on the cheek
not on the lips
honest i did

now our eyes are softly smiling
but afraid to meet
a world of possibilities
at our fingertips

i meant to kiss you
on the cheek
not on the lips
honest i did

i meant to kiss you
on the cheek
not on the lips
but that’s not what i did

v.p. of human resources said to captain hook
‘we're running out of food, captain: captain, take a look’
captain hook took a look; took a look & scratched his head
tearing through his skin and crying ‘arrrr, we're in the red’

‘man the pullies, sell my parrot, put the proceeds in a bank
give the pirates their two leagues notice
and make 'em walk the plank’
the v.p. grinned: ‘i don't need to tell you, but i feel i should
you're good, captain, good, captain, good, captain good’

working on the high seas, high seas
working on the high seas, high seas
you might fall, you might freeze, high seas
working on the high seas

so the v.p. blew his horn and the pirates hit the deck, but when
they heard where they were headed, hell, they headed for his neck
screaming ‘this, this is the thanks we get, nothing gold nor green
what about the booty, what about the bitches
and the sailors we laid clean’

the v.p. he unsheathed a knife and backed up to a door, asking
‘isn't my ignorance enough for you’ but his mates demanded more
so he carved a little piece of his heart out
which they liked cuz hearts are vital
course it just grew right back that night in keeping with his title

working on the high seas, high seas
working on the high seas, high seas
you might fall, you might freeze, high seas
working on the high seas

and one by one they walked the plank
a few they floated, most they sank
and all around the word spread fast
cuz people talk but money only laughs

so if you're by the beach on an especially clear day
you may spy a tiny pirate flag from far away
and if you look beneath it midst the scurvy & the lice
you will see the outlines of a captain & his vice

and though he tends to mumble, let me translate if i may
‘use em, lose em, use em, lose em, arrrr, that's what i say’
and if you listen closely you will hear the other add
‘you're bad, captain, bad, captain, bad, captain, bad
yes, you're bad, captain, bad, captain, bad, captain bad’

working on the high seas, high seas
working on the high seas, high seas
you might fall, you might freeze, high seas
working on the high seas

so you're lying awake
in the dark dead of night
staring out of the window
at the sky

cuz where there's a sky, there's a star
and where there's a face, there's a heart
and where there's a heart
there is a chance

where there's a day, there's a dawn
and where there's a voice, there's a song
and where there's a song
there is a dance

won't you dance with me now
while the world is asleep
every mile apart's
beneath our feet

cuz where there's a sky, there's a star
and where there's a face, there's a heart
and where there's a heart
there is a chance
